St. George’s Cup

In the fall of 1993 after what was one of the most difficult periods for south Florida’s residents. Some of the men of First United Methodist Church in Homestead decided to get together along with a few of their friends and go play a round of golf. For those new to homestead or south Florida you may not remember that in aug.1992 homestead was hit by one of the most divesting natural disasters in modern history.
Hurricane Andrew was, at the time of its occurrence in August 1992, the most destructive hurricane in United States history. It caused major damage in the Bahamas and Louisiana, but the greatest impact was in South Florida, where it made landfall at Category 5 hurricane intensity on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale, with wind speeds up to 165 mph .Passing directly through our town of Homestead. Andrew obliterated entire blocks of homes, in many cases leaving only the concrete foundations. Over 25,000 houses were destroyed in Miami-Dade County alone, and nearly 100,000 more were severely damaged. The damage total across the affected regions exceeded $26 billion.
One year later Hurricane Georges was threatening to bring turmoil to our way of life, like his predecessor before him did. Hurricane Georges made landfall in Key West, FL on the morning of the September 25th as a Category 2 hurricane. The hurricane maintained Category 2 intensity as it tracked through the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall near Biloxi. The storm dissipated near the northeast Florida/southeast Georgia coast by the morning of October 1, 1998.
But the Methodist men had a resilience that was not going to be shaken, and showed up on time for their tee-times. That day 12 men, out of sheer stubbornness gave birth to what over the next 20 something years have become our beloved St. Georges Cup Golf Tournament
Along the way, in a demonstration of their kindness and love for our town and its people the Methodist Men embarked on an idea to use the tournament to raise funds for scholarships. Now 22 years later we have granted almost 50 scholarships. Of course this achievement could not have been possible without the support of many players, sponsors and friends.
